Nine
Nine was named in recognition of Title IX, a section of the Education Amendments of 1972 which stated:
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
The changes that came from these 37 words opened doors for women to excel in academics, athletics and beyond, as well as helped define a federally funded institution's responsibility to end sexual harassment and violence.
Silence
noun: complete absence of sound
verb: cause to become silent; prohibit or prevent from speaking
Nine (vol 1) is a collection of women writers and visual artists responding in various ways to the concept of Silence. The work of these talented women was collected and published in a zine that will be distributed to American high school age youth with the goal of exposing them to contemporary female artists from around the world.
Gallery Exhibition: A Quiet Stand
Selected artists featured in the Nine zines came together for a gallery exhibition at the Forsberg Art Gallery at Lower Columbia College in Longview, WA. Due to COVID-19, the gallery was closed to the public. However, a video was made commemorating the efforts of these Nine women artists.
